On the 1st May 2015 the 9th / 12th Royal Lancers amalgamated with the Queen's Royal Lancers to form the Royal Lancers. As well as the 9th / 12th Royal Lancers Museum in Derby there is a sister regimental Museum, the Queen's Royal Lancers Museum, based in Thoresby, Nottinghamshire.

On the 5th April 2017 Queen Elizabeth II, who is the Royal Lancers colonel-in-chief, renamed the cavalry regiment the "Royal Lancers ( Queen Elizabeths' Own )".
