Sold by Order of a direct descendant the Victoria Cross and Indian Mutiny Medal awarded to Captain Hastings Harington, Bengal Artillery, has been sold at auction by Spink of London.

The sale estimate was between £120,000 and £150,000. The sale hammer price realised £140,000. The identity of the purchaser has not been revealed.


For the award of the Victoria Cross

[ London Gazette, 24 December 1858 ], Lucknow, Indian Mutiny, 14 - 22 November 1857, Lieutenant Hastings Edward Harington, Bengal Artillery.

With Lieutenant Edward Harington, Rough Rider Edward Jennings, Gunner Thomas Laughnan and Gunner Hugh McInnes all of the Bengal Artillery.

Elected respectively, under the 13th clause of the Royal Warrant of the 29th of January 1856, by the Officers and non-commissioned officers generally, and by the private soldiers of each troop or battery.

For conspicuous gallantry at the Relief of Lucknow, from the 14th to the 22nd of November 1857.

Hastings Harington was invested with his Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace on the 8th June 1859.


Hastings Harington died of cholera on 20 July 1861 at Agra, India, and was buried in the city's cemetery. There is a headstone.
