THE TURFSTONE COMMEMORATING THE GRAVE OF PRIVATE JOHN MCDOUGALL VC HAS BEEN EXTENSIVELY CLEANED IN OLD CALTON CEMETERY, EDINBURGH.

The well known military Victoria Cross grave restorer, Steve Davies, has been very busy refurbishing the graves and cleaning the headstones of holders of the Victoria Cross buried in Edinburgh. One of the graves is that of Private John McDougall VC, 44th Regment ( Essex Regiment ) buried in Old Calton Cemetery.

For the award of the Victoria Cross

[ London Gazette, 13 August 1861 ], Taku Forts, China, 21 August 1860, Private John McDougall, 44th ( East Essex ) Regiment of Foot.

For distinguished gallantry in swimming the Ditches, and entering the North Taku Fort by an embrasure during the assault.

They were the first of the English established on the walls of the Fort, which they entered in the order in which their names are here recorded ( Rogers RM, McDougall J, Lenon EH ) each one being assisted by the others to mount the embrasure.


John McDougall was invested with his Victoria Cross by GOC Belgaum, Brigadier General Frank Adams in Belgaum, India, on the 2nd October 1862.
