Private Charles McCorrie of the 57th Regiment ( Middlesex Regiment ) died on the 8th April 1857, aged 27, whilst serving with his regiment in Malta, and was buried in the Msida Bastion Cemetery, Valetta, in an unmarked grave.

The Malta Heritage Society, known in Malta as the Din I-Art Helwa, commissioned a memorial stone through the efforts of local man Julian Gatt, who asked the Victoria Cross Society to support an appeal for funds. The appeal was published in the Society's Journal ( October 2011 Edition ) and within a short period of time the target sum was reached.

A memorial stone has now been erected in the Msida Bastion Cemetery to commemorate Private Charles McCorrie VC. A prestigious ceremony was held at the cemetery on Monday, 16th April 2012, when the memorial stone was unveiled by HRH The Duke of Gloucester, seen here with Commander Brooksbank, Royal Navy. The ceremony was planned to coincide with the visit of the Duke of Gloucester who presided over the anniversary of Malta's George Cross.

For the award of the Victoria Cross

[ London Gazette, 24 February 1857 ], Sebastopol, Crimean War, 23 June 1855, Private Charles McCorrie, 57th Regiment ( Middlesex Regiment ).

On the night of the 23rd June 1855, he threw over the parapet a live shell, which had been thrown from the enemy’s battery.

Charles McCorrie's Victoria Cross was sent to Malta where he was serving but he died on 8th April 1857 before the investiture could take place.
