Major General William McBean VC died on the 23rd June 1878 at Shooter's Hill, South East London and his body was then transported to Edinburgh where he was buried in the city's Grange Cemetery. This style of stone marker is prone to discolouration as Steve Davies discovered when beginning the job to clean the stone. After much effort the task has now been completed and the stone marker looks back to its best.

For the award of the Victoria Cross

[ London Gazette, 24 December 1858 ], Begum Bagh, Lucknow, Indian Mutiny, 11 March 1858, Lieutenant William McBean, 93rd Regiment ( Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders )

For distinguished personal bravery in killing eleven of the enemy with his own hand in the main breach of the Begum Bagh at Lucknow on the 11th March 1858.

SUMMARY: At the assault on the Begum Bagh, Lucknow, McBean killed eleven rebels, one after the other. Confronted by a twelfth, a Havildar, several men came to his assistance. He called to them not to interfere and he and the Havildar set to with their swords. He made a feint cut, but instead gave the point and his sword pierced the heart of his opponent.

When presented with his medal and congratulated on a good day's work, he replied: "Tutts, it did'na tak me twenty minutes".

William McBean was invested with his Victoria Cross by Major General Sir Robert Garrett, at Umbeyla, Peshawar, India, on the 6th February 1859.
