Corporal John Connors VC died on the 29th January 1857 after falling from the battlements at Port Neuf, whilst serving on the Mediterranean Island of Corfu. Connors was buried in the British Cemetery, Corfu Town, with a headstone marking his grave which had seriously deteriorated over the years and was badly damaged.

It was through the efforts of the Victoria Cross and George Cross Association that a project was put into operation to erect a new memorial stone over the John Connors' burial plot. This was successful.

For the award of the Victoria Cross

[ London Gazette, 24 February 1857 ], The Redan, Sebastopol, Crimea, 8 September 1855, Corporal John Connors, 3rd Regiment ( East Kent Regiment ).

Distinguished himself most conspicuously at the assault on the Redan, 8th September 1855, in personal conflict with the Russians; rescued an Officer of the 30th Regiment, who was surrounded by Russians, by shooting one and bayoneting another, and was observed, inside the Redan, in personal combat with the Russians for some time.

The London Gazette announcement for the award of the Victoria Cross to John Connors came too late for him to be aware of it as he had died in January 1857. His Victoria Cross was sent to a next of kin but nothing has been heard of the Cross since. The National Army Museum holds a "Copy" Victoria Cross.
